At 290 acres, Lake Dorothy is the largest lake in the Alpine
Lakes Wilderness. The lake is well known and large crowds can
be expected. On two trips made in 1992, two Boy Scout troops were
encountered. Bad weather doesn't detour campers, so expect to
encounter many people any weekend from June through September.
For those interested in further exploration, there lies Bear,
Deer, and Snoqualmie Lakes up the trail. For those who can arrange
a pickup at Taylor River, the trail offers a great one way trip
through some of the larger lakes of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness
Area.
Directions: Drive US 2 east from Gold Bar and turn right just
before the highway tunnel, at a sign for Money Creek Campground,
on Old Cascade Highway. In 1 1/4 miles, turn right onto a Miller
River Road, which is gravel and drive 8 1/2 miles to the trailhead
at 2200 feet elevation.
